New Geography

New Geography is a 5”x4”x3.5” sculpture made from found objects and green string. It addresses the ethical concern of accumulation, materialism, and its effect on our environment. This piece imagines a future in which the geography of Earth reclaims and overgrows our landfills and manmade objects without problem. New Geography is a bridge between our current situation on Earth and an idealistic world where the land has recovered from us. It conceptualizes the relinquishing of power back to the land, and acknowledgement that dominance does not belong to humans and that we are ultimately at the mercy of our planet. It represents a sort of process or in-between stage where our impact is still visible but disappearing.

The process of creating New Geography consisted of arranging found materials, and wrapping them in string. Wrapping the objects symbolically represents the Earth physically taking back what we've put on it by building or growing on top of and around it. The shape of the sculpture is inspired by my intuitive reaction to the materials and repetition of branching protrusions or legs. Some incorporated objects include metal screws, plastic toys and beads, electronic waste such as camera parts and electronic plugs.
